When A Scammer Rings

When a scammer rings

Brooklyn A works against scammers to help New Yorkers stay in their homes. This is how and where to find help.

Dear friends,

To protect our homeowners – that’s our goal. Scammers know that homeowners, particularly older adults and Black and Latino homeowners, are struggling to pay their mortgages due to the economic impact of COVID-19 and more recently dealing with post-Hurricane Ida repairs. Scammers are working double time to steal deeds and push predatory loans.

This is why our foreclosure prevention practice is designed to serve low- and moderate-income homeowners in the neighborhoods with the highest rates of foreclosures in New York City. Brooklyn A attorneys provide homeowners with options and legal advice and representation on foreclosure matters and defend against predatory lending and deed theft.

Left: Suspicious “We Buy Houses” sign advertising nondescript foreclosure services. Right: Sample of scam letter for NYS tax levy/seizure and foreclosure.

We are here to help. Brooklyn A is supported by the New York State Attorney General’s office and is authorized to provide legal services. We also want people to know to watch out for organizations that do not have their interest in mind.

We are working hard to reach vulnerable homeowners and to spread the news that we are here to provide free, quality representation. We need your help to do this. By sharing this information with your family, friends, and neighbors, you can help save a home.

One homeowner we recently helped was receiving approximately ten calls a day from a third party claiming it could help them get current on mortgage. Calls like these are scams, often pretending to be government-sponsored entities, which is confusing and scary for homeowners. This is not a unique case; it’s an increasing trend as scammers take advantage of homeowners being served threats of foreclosure action as forbearance ends. It’s the perfect storm for vulnerable homeowners to fall victim to false promises.

Our message is this: Brooklyn A can help. If you or someone you know would like to request the assistance of our services, contact us at info@bka.org or (718) 487-2300.For a list of our legal services for homeowners, renters, small businesses, taxpayers, and non-profits, visit www.bit.ly/bkakit.
