Q: Where did you grow up and what brought you to New York?staff Vlera Veseli

Vlera: I was born back home in Albania. I spent the first decade of my life there. After the genocide back home, my father was separated from his family and became a refugee in 1999 in the USA. We came to New York in 2005 and I spent the remainder of my life in Jackson Heights, Queens where I currently reside.

Q: Have you always worked in client services?

Vlera: Yes, hospitality is something I have always been passionate about. I have always worked in customer service, the feeling of being helpful is something I will always enjoy.

Q: What made you want to join Brooklyn A?

Vlera: I love the saying “love thy neighbor” and I live by it! I love being part of my community and I’m always willing to lend a helping hand. When I heard of Brooklyn A and the work that was being done, what we stood for I just felt that I was built for this!

Q: Small businesses are integral to New York City’s economy. What’s it been like to work closely with our small business clients and get a deeper understanding of how they operate?

Vlera: Prior to working for Brooklyn A, I had this idea that if one owned a business, they must be rich. Working closely with them I’ve realized that I was way off. These businesses are often run by one person, the business owner themselves doing operations and being the front person. Many clients get into commercial leases without a good understanding of the legal terms and how they will be impacted by them, but I have seen many clients that are continually looking for opportunities to learn.” With Vlera’s ok on the rewrite.

Q: You’ve been part of a period of growth for the CED program. How have you and the team been able to expand your reach across the city?

Vlera: Proactive outreach, building strong relationships with other community-based organizations, following through on referrals, and always being a helping hand.

Q: What’s one thing all small business owners should know to protect their rights as commercial tenants?

Vlera: Never sign a lease without having an attorney advocating for you!

Q: When you’re not working, what are some of your favorite hobbies?

Vlera: Walking, reading and spoiling my beautiful cat.

Q: What’s one movie, book, TV show, or album you’ve enjoyed recently that you’d recommend to everyone?

Vlera: The Alchemist.
