Exciting News! We’ve Rebranded!

Dear friends,

It’s official! I’m thrilled to share that as of today, Brooklyn Legal Services Corporation A (Brooklyn A) is Build Up Justice NYC!

We’re embracing this change for two key reasons:

Accuracy: Brooklyn A was founded in 1968 as part of the War on Poverty, with a mission to deliver free legal services to underserved and marginalized communities in Northeast Brooklyn. Over the past decade we’ve dramatically expanded our services across all five boroughs. Last year, we handled over 5,000 cases, serving clients in every single city council district, and impacting the lives of more than 8,000 low-income and marginalized New Yorkers.  We also opened our first office in Queens.  And earlier this year, we proudly celebrated another milestone—welcoming our 100th team member! “Brooklyn A” no longer captures the breadth of our reach or our impact on the communities we serve.

Clarity: The creation of another organization called “Brooklyn Legal Services” several years ago has led to ongoing confusion among our stakeholders including the courts, elected officials, and clients who mistakenly confuse the two entities. A fresh, distinct identity allows us to clearly communicate our mission and sets us apart as a unique organization.

What will not change is our commitment to justice. Build Up Justice NYC reflects our dedication to grassroots change and to the pursuit of justice. Our new name embodies the idea that justice isn’t static—it’s something we build together, case by case, community by community. As the citywide organization we are today, we will continue to work alongside our clients to challenge injustice and inequity and create lasting change. Together, we are working to ensure that justice is not just an ideal, but a reality we construct every day.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. Thank you for standing with us—and with the New Yorkers who need us most. We can’t wait to continue this journey with you as we build up justice, together.

Onward!

Some housekeeping items:

  • We are transitioning to a new domain – the format of our email addresses will not change (first name initial and last name) but will now end in buj.org (for e.g. [email protected]). Our phone numbers and office locations remain the same.
  • We are working on a new website, which will be launched over the summer.
